What is a Sewer Lateral?
Every building has a sewer lateral. The sewer lateral is the main pipe that connects the building to the city’s sewer system or your septic tank. Laterals for homes are typically 4″-6″ diameter, buried 6-12 feet below the ground surface, and usually made of clay, cast iron, or PVC, depending on the year of construction.
How Does Trenchless Sewer Repair Work?
The basic concept behind trenchless sewer repair is placing a new pipe within the existing pipe. Currently, there are two methods in common use: pipe lining and pipe bursting.
Pipe lining works by inserting a flexible tube into the damaged length of pipe. This tube is coated with a special resin that hardens within the damaged pipe, essentially creating a new pipe within the old one. When the resin hardens, it remains durable and resists corrosion.
Pipe bursting is a more aggressive way to replace damaged sewer pipes, but it gets the job done. This method works by breaking and expanding existing sewer pipe while replacing it with a highly durable polyethylene pipe. Whereas pipe lining might be a good method for targeted repairs, pipe bursting might be necessary for more comprehensive replacements.
How Long Does Trenchless Sewer Line Repair Last?
Trenchless sewer line repairs can last several decades, perhaps even up to 50 years. This is about as long as cast iron pipes are expected to last.
